Now in its 7th year, the AutoNation Saltwater Round-up is one of the best tournaments on the South Texas coast. It’s a one-day tournament designed for all anglers of all ages and skill levels. Anglers are allowed to boat fish or kayak fish. There are 3 divisions: family, team and kayak. Each team may bring in 3 fish: One redfish and 2 trout. I had nothing else going on that weekend, so I decided to fish it. I work for AutoNation too, so I sort of had to be there.
Trout were up first. The bite off live croaker was steady for most of the morning, with a few overs caught between 3 anglers. Unfortunately we weren’t able to land that kicker fish we were searching for. All trout were caught in 3′ to 5′ of water.
From water, cooler to dinner table. Sandwich and baked; both equally tasty.
After our trout limit, and a quick stop at the bait shop for cut ballyhoo, our Redfish hunt was underway. We found deeper pools not too far from the marina, with hopes the big reds would be waiting. Shayne was right. He chummed and not too long after my pole was in the water, I had my first red. She was right at 24″. Not a big one but 100% satisfying. We only caught 2 but that was good enough for me.
I’m not sure who won but one lucky angler took home this grand prize. A new 2017 Majek RFL with a Premier Yamaha 90 hp motor and Coastline Trailer.
Even if you don’t win a boat next year, at least you can try and get one of these cool trophies. See you in 2018.
